In loving memory of Gwyneth Eleanor Cox who sadly passed away on 19th February 2016.

Born in Worsley, a Lancashire lass, sister t0 David and Ruth, daughter of Fred and Molly Hargreaves and mum to Alison. She was also a step-mum to Tony, mum-in-law to Dave and step-gran to Frank and Tom.

Married to Bill (Garry) Berry, who she sadly lost after only three years together, and then she met John Cox through her love of sailing. Alison came along in April 1970 as an early birthday present, but again sadly they only had 9 years with her dad.

Gwyn (Gwynklie) was an avid traveller and no continent was untouched, including Antarctica, and she still has many loving family and friends across the world.

During her life she studied at Bedford college in London, was a Director of the Hove Samaritans, supported the Marlin swimming club for the disabled, as well as joining various bridge and scrabble clubs, amongst many other achievements and activites.

Her indomitable character kept her strong and active until the last few years when she was looked after by her family at home in Belvedere Kent, where her keen sense of humour and intellect shone til the end.

We have included some photos celebrating her life. Like all of you we will remember Mum with a smile and very fondest love. Please fell free to contribute your own thoughts, messages and photos of the times you have spent with her.

Martin Fisher donated £50 in memory of Gwyneth

Sorry we can't be with the rest of the family today.

I knew and respected Gwyneth as my mother's friend, part of the family from the beginning. In retrospect I should have recognised rather more quickly how bright and independent she was, as it came as a surprise when she responded to our wedding gift list - "No" she said, "I’ll get you what I know you really want!" In good time we received what came to be known as 'The Gwyneth Tea Pot', a gift that was often used, and never forgotten!
Also never forgotten was Gwyneth’s friendship with my mother who was asked to write her memoirs for our daughter’s school project in 2001, she began: ‘My best friend was Gwyneth and she is still my friend today. We always sat next to each other in class and during ‘break’ or after lunch, we would tie a scarf around her left leg and around my right leg to practise for the three legged race at the summer sports day. We could run very fast like this and sometimes won the race. Once on the way home, we bought a bar of chocolate and broke it in half. As we ate it we solemnly swore to be friends forever!’
Later they explored the world together and I hope they will explore and enjoy the next life too. - ‘The angel also showed me the river of the water of life, sparkling like crystal, and coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb and flowing down the middle of the city's street. On each side of the river was the tree of life, which bears fruit twelve times a year, once each month; and its leaves are for the healing of the nations’ (Revelation 22).

  • Hi Alison. So sorry to hear about your mum. I have fond memories of her from my time at the swimming club and couple of visits to Lloyd Road. I hope you are well. It must be nearly 25 years since we lost touch. Deepest sympathy to you and the rest of the family. Best wishes Pete Hawkins

  • Judging from the elm trees in the background and the non-edged flower beds, I think you could be in the garden with the red brick walls
