I've only known John for a few years but he was an absolute inspiration to me. His determination not to let his health issues get in the way of him living his life and his willingness to take on things to give himself new challenges are just two of the things I'll always remember about him. He was a fantastic man to work alongside and his singing voice was fabulous. Paul and I will miss you John. I know you're leading a choir in heaven already! Louise xxxx

Daniel and I have so many wonderful memories of Uncle John! Whilst we didn't see him very much we loved his phone calls at Christmas and birthdays that always made me giggle. Daniel and I particularly remember fondly the trip Uncle John and Aunty Virgie made to New Zealand many years ago and stayed with us - we had such a blast! Dan learnt lots sitting chatting with Uncle John, going for ice creams and I always loved eating with him! Uncle John you have been a gentle, loving and caring influence in our lives who always made us smile; you will be greatly missed. Sending much love to Aunty Virgie and the family at this time.
Love Nicola and Daniel Goodman

Despite living on the other side of the world, so far from Finningley, Aunty Virgie and Uncle John were ever present in my years growing up through their many letters and phone calls (not to mention the Smarties and Matchbox toys they sent to far off New Zealand at Christmas). In my older and married life when we got to meet and spend different times with Uncle John, we always admired and enjoyed his gentleness, dignity, humour, and genuine interest that he showed in us and our children's lives. We will miss you Uncle John, but you leave us with treasured memories. Stephen & Gillian Goodman

I first met John through the County Referees' Association (RA) of which I am Secretary. John was a real stalwart of the RA in Doncaster and the County RA Committee, he will be sorely missed. Sadly I cannot attend the funeral as I'll be out of the country on holiday but my thoughts will be with you.
