Mary Ann Chapman was born on 25th March 1927 according to official documents, or 23rd March 1927 according to Mary. She was the 9th child of a large and happy family. Mary Watkins and Sydney Chapman met as teenagers, and they married on March 4th 1950. Mary had two children, the first a daughter named Susan (b.1952) and then a son John (b.1955).

Mary lived all her working life in London. She loved London and whilst living in Chelmsford was always keen to receive a copy of the Islington or Hackney Gazette to keep her in touch. Mary had various jobs throughout her life, but her last was at Companies House where she worked with two of her sisters Ginny and Nell. When Mary and Syd retired, they moved to a house two doors away from their daughter Sue, and her family in Chelmsford.

Mary's family were the centre of her life. Sue produced two daughters, Julie (b.1978) and Jenny (b.1981). John had three children, Debbie (b.1982), Steven (b.1984) and Andrew (b.1986). Latterly, her pride and joy were her great grandchildren, Tegan, Daisy, Isabelle, Sam, Sidney, Mia, & Emily.
Mary always wanted to see them, or failing that, hear tales of them or see pictures and videos of them.

Mary was the last of the Watkin siblings Connie, Julia, Johnie, Nelly, Billy, Lenny, Betty & Charlie (twins) & Ginny - the end of a era has come, Sadly, she also survived her beloved husband Syd and daughter Sue. She bore these loses stoically, but missed them badly.

The Memorial Service will be held on 1.30 Friday 8th July 2016 in the South chapel of Chelmsford Crematorium. Those wishing to attend the service can either meet there or beforehand at John's home 30 Burnside Crescent CM1 4EH.

Mourners are invited to join the family afterwards at the Rose & Crown, The Green, Writtle, CM1 3DT.

John respectfully requests that floral tributes are just for the immediate family. However, should you wish to express your condolences, you are invited to donate to Cancer Research, either via the funeral directors or this website.
