In loving memory of Vicky Stock who sadly passed away on 11th January 2017.
Vicky was born in Basingstoke 13 March 1979. Her early years weren't easy and she suffered a haemorrhage at the age of just 18 months. The fight she showed to recover from this was to shape her life forever. Despite having to learn to talk and walk again, her recovery was quick and she excelled at school, frequently winning the head girl award at the Grey House School, Hartley Wintney. Following this she won a scholarship to attend the Abbey School, which is an independent selective day school for girls, in Reading. Once again she excelled and her achievements included a distinction in the Latin special paper.
She had many interests at this time too including horse riding, horse racing, playing the piano, clarinet and violin and her love of animals, including her aviary and her beloved King Charles spaniel, Rowley.
On turning 18, she decided to go to The University of Birmingham to read Classics. After achieving this undergraduate degree, she went on to do a year’s study of Egyptology. She enjoyed her time at University and was involved in many societies and made many good friends. She was proud of her time as chair of the University Science fiction society.
Her love of science fiction continued after University and she went on to be secretary of the Birmingham Science Fiction Group. She was also secretary of the Blackwell Concert Band. Something that she was very proud of and was an important part of her life. She also played the clarinet and bass clarinet with the band.
After finishing University, she worked briefly at the UGC cinema in Birmingham, before moving on to the box office at Symphony Hall. It was at this time that Vicky met Tim in June 2002. They contacted each other again shortly after that evening and she embarked on a tour of Europe. That trip was cut short of the original intended plans but met up with Tim again after returning to the UK. They met up again and started their relationship.
After a brief period of unemployment for Vicky, she started temporary work through the temp agency, Office Angels, who Vicky had done some work for in her final year at University.
After a brief spell at a mortgage administrators, she found a temporary position at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Northfield in the medical records department in August 2003. In December 2003, she successfully applied for a permanent position in theatres as Information and Audit Officer. She was known as an extremely diligent and hardworking employee.
In 2008 she applied for a position in the Governance department as a Clinical Audit and Information Officer. This is a position she held until she retired owing to ill health in 2015.
After buying a house with Tim in 2008 and moving to Northfield from Barnt Green, Vicky Married Tim at St Michael’s Church, Elmley Lovett In June 2009. In December 2009, aged just 30, and only six months after getting married, Vicky was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. In the years that followed, Vicky had several operations and rounds of treatment. Once again, the fight she showed was incredible and everyone who knew her at this time couldn’t fail to take inspiration from her bravery. She never let the illness blunt her love for life and continued to live life to full, even when her mobility was compromised from 2015.
From the time of her diagnosis in 2010 right up until her death, she was a passionate fund raiser and volunteer for numerous cancer charities, on a personal basis and through the band. She organised a joint concert with two other bands at the Adrian Boult hall in Birmingham, which was one of her proudest achievements.
Also during this time, Vicky’s faith grew and she was confirmed in St Andrew’s church in Barnt Green in 2012. She was actively involved in the church community and made many good friends in the church. Her faith was strong and the difficulties she experienced in life only served to strengthen that faith.
One lesson Vicky taught us all is to never complain about the hand you’re dealt in life, but always make the most of what you do have. She'll be sorely missed by all who knew her.
