Alice Elder was a remarkable individual. Her intellectual capacity was prodigious but was always understated because of her unassuming personality and her overwhelming interest in other people. She taught overseas and in various locations in the UK, she wrote a children's book, 'The Cats of Catterness', and a historical novel, 'The Stone Ermine', but - always - her first consideration was for the wellbeing of others. She loved her family passionately, rejoicing in the affectionate sobriquet, 'Sassy Granny', and considered herself very fortunate indeed to have built up so many treasured friendships over the years.

What was always most important to her was to be 'true' and she was always very concerned to get things 'right' for others. She needn't have worried - in all her friendships, her daily interactions and her creative endeavours, she unerringly enriched the lives and experiences of others... just by being herself!

The official newspaper announcement of her death was as follows:
ELDER
Peacefully at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on 17 October 2017, Alice (aged 92): loving mother of Michael and David, devoted granny of Sarah, Alasdair, Rebecca, Rachel and Catrin, and proud author of 'The Stone Ermine'. Committal at Stonehaven Dunnottar Church of Scotland Kirkyard at 11:45 on Monday 23 October 2017, followed by a Thanksgiving Service in Stonehaven Dunnottar Church at 12:30. Black optional. No flowers please, but donations to RNLI would be most welcome.

In addition, those attending the funeral are warmly invited to join Alice's family for refreshments at St Bridget's Church Hall, Bridgefield Terrace, Stonehaven, immediately after the service.
