Larry was my boss during my time at the Berni Inn (Jolly Hosteller) in Streatham (March to October 1985). I took an immediate liking to this lovely, affable guy. He was key in helping me on the romantic front, urging me to be bold with the girl of my dreams. I will always be grateful to him for that. On my 21st birthday, Larry grabbed me aside at the end of my shift and presented me with a bottle of champagne, which we preceded to make short work of. He also pressed £20 in to my hand which left me speechless. I had only just moved to London from Scotland and Larry instinctively knew I was a bit lonely. He mentored me and helped me make new friends. I could go on and on with tales of the laughs all the staff shared with Larry. The last time I saw him was in 1985 at his wedding reception. He was one of the few people I've ever met who stills raises a smile to my face, 32 years after meeting him. I was very saddened when I heard of his passing. I had tried to contact him through a website on personalities in South Norwood, but sadly didn't manage to communicate with him. Larry in my eyes was a very special guy. He was outgoing, thoughtful, funny and above all, a great friend. I've always missed him and he will never be far from my thoughts. I now tell my own grandchildren of this former boxer I once new. I hope it is of some comfort to his family that his memory is alive in Edinburgh. My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones. Larry was a lovely, lovely man. Rest his soul.

  • Reece, I knew your Dad when I was a young soldier in Shrewsbury . He used to come to the Barracks and train. If I bumped into him socially, he always had time for a chat. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. RIP Larry - a true gentleman!
