In loving memory of Joan Keith who sadly passed away on 24th October 2017
Born in Penicuik on 3rd August 1943 to proud parents John & Elsie Sandilands, younger sister to brother Jim.
She was to be a Penicuik girl all her days. A fact that she was very proud of, as she had a strong sense of community.
Joan married the love of her life Charlie Keith, on 6th March 1965. And went on to have 4 happy, healthy boys together. Colin, Gary, Alastair and Alan, were her pride and joy, proving herself to be a wonderful mother.
After completing a secretarial course at Esk Valley College. Joan gained employment in the offices of North British Rubber, which later became Uniroyal. Her four sons took her away from the workplace for 10 years. Before returning part-time as a shop assistant in 'Stevies' papershop at Eastfield Drive. Quickly becoming a favourite with customers young and old alike. From there Joan moved on to a position as receiptionist within Penicuik Medical Practice. Once again, her ready smile and people skills, endeared her to those she met daily. Once retired Joan chose to volunteer at the community ran Ladywood Leisure Centre, again, a friendly face, that people were glad to see.
Joan and Charlie enjoyed many holidays together, at home and abroad. In fact, at one time returned to the same family run hotel in Cyprus 18 years in a row! Trips to Australia were a feature of their travels as well, visiting son Gary and his family. This, despite Joan's hatred of flying!!!!
Joan excelled at many sports. Such as Badminton, Skittles, and later in life lawn bowls. Always keen to win, or at least play well, but never one to get upset about losing.
Life came full circle for Joan with the arrival of her grandchildren. Eight in all, and nothing was more special to her, than spending time with them.
The most common tributes to Joan, are that she was totally family orientated, and an especially lovely lady.
I think she would be happy with that.

Goodbye Joan. It was a pleasure being your neighbour for 42 years. Seeing all our children growing up into wonderful people. We will miss your chats and your banter. Hope you are pain free now and catching up with all your family and friends up there. We know you will be watching over Charlie, The Boys and their families. Sleep peacefully.
