Simon Mark Udell (Pip) passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Wednesday, 1st of November 2017, following a brief battle with cancer. It is a shock that we will never truly recover from.

Messages of love and sorrow have flooded in from friends, family and colleagues - from all over the world! It is truly mind blowing just how many people were connected to this one man, and how fondly he will be remembered.

Please I would like to invite any and all to come and celebrate the life of the most amazing husband, father, grandfather, sibling, friend and colleague that any of us could wish for - he meant so much to so many of us.

We will be holding his funeral at the Poole Crematorium at 3:30PM on Wednesday, 15th of November 2017, followed by refreshments at his favourite pub - the Old Inn in Holt (

As an expression of sympathy, the family asks that any donations are made to Cancer Research UK either to O'Hara Funeral Directors or via the donation link on this page.

We hope to see you all there, to swap stories and memories, and to comfort and console.

We all love you Simon.

We are all saddened to learn of Simon's passing at Mandarin Oriental.
I have personally known Simon for many years and his professionalism, calmness, skilful, genuine, kindness, always available attitude to anything he did is a true testament to the person he was.
Thank you, Simon, for all the support you have provided MOHG and myself personally throughout the years.

It was beautiful to see so many people there, paying their respects to Dad. He will be sorely missed, by many, and it is remarkable just how many people knew him, respected him and loved him.

His time with us was far too short, theres no getting around that, but he really made the most of it.

Still miss you Dad

The Benbria/Wesley Clover team and I are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Simon. We enjoyed the many opportunities to work with Simon and the rest of his team – whether it be here in Ottawa during one of his visits or at a trade-show event. It was clear that Simon maintained a passion for his work and built a solid and lasting team along the way. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Simon’s family and friends during this difficult time.

It was a pleasure and an honour to work with Simon. He was so smart, calm and fair. If I ever wanted Simon's attention I would send him a spreadsheet and ask for help - guaranteed within 5 minutes he'd call - he loved a challenge. He was a great mentor to me and a truly lovely person. I miss him, his wisdom and his gentle, childish humour every day. RIP Simon.

Like everyone else, I still find it very hard to accept he is no longer with us. I have known Simon a very long time back when I worked for Forte and one of the most memorable projects we worked on together was at the Grosvenor House, which was a great success eventually!
Since then we have worked on many projects and I considered Simon a friend, he was such a caring, genuine guy with a great sense of humour and he will be greatly missed.
My thoughts are with all his family and friends as I can only imagine how difficult it must be, however we were all very lucky to have known Simon as he enriched our lives and we should celebrate that.

Simon was everything anyone could ask for in a boss, friend and mentor. He always had time for everyone, whether for a work challenge or needing advice about pretty much anything. He made work feel like an extended family get together and it will never feel quite the same without him around.
His legacy to us all should be to hold the highest family values that he did and to exceed rather than do just enough with any opportunity that arises.

RIP Simon I shall miss you

Giles here (with Angela). We are both still in total shock, only now do we realise what the term ‘speechless’ really means, and that is saying something if anyone knows Angela! (Simon would chuckle). To me, Simon was the ultimate role model, a gent, a professional and most importantly an inspiring father figure, how did he do ‘all that’ in one short lifetime?

I personally share a similar experience with my Dad in terms of age and sudden passing, it’s tough beyond belief, but time does comfort you in knowing that he is always with you, not necessarily in a spiritual way, but with all the wonderful memories you have together, these priceless moments will make it easier, keep you on track and remind you of ‘what would Simon do’ ;) Having that will remind you that he will always be with you.

Our feelings go out to all of the family and please do reach out whenever you need anything, and we mean anything.

Much like his biggest music idol, he is now a total Legend!

RIP Simon - we miss you

Angela & Giles

I never thought I would lose my dad so suddenly and so soon. He was the best, most supportive father I could have wished for and I'll miss him so much. I hope that someday, with enough support for cancer charities, no one will have to grow up knowing their parent can't be there to watch and support them in all the important milestones of their life.

Simon was one of the most intelligent men I have ever met.
His memory and knowledge was quite remarkable.
He changed the Hospitality Industry which will be his legacy.
But his integrity, sensitivity and kindness made him so special to all of us.
