  • Arthur was very proud of this photo. It shows him on the ground staff of the Oval. He is on the far left of the group and would have been aged around 16 at the time. The legendary Head Groundsman, 'Bosser' Martin, is the man wearing the trilby and wielding a cricket stump.

Yesterday we laid to rest our dear Uncle Arthur. His passing will leave a huge hole in all our lives that we will stuff full of the wonderful memories he has given us.
He wouldn't want us to feel sad but saying goodbye was heartbreaking. I couldn't think of a more fitting farewell song and it's stuck on loop in my head.. Bring me Sunshine, in your smile, Bring me Laughter, all the while, In this world where we live, there should be more happiness,... Bring me fun, bring me sunshine, bring me love 🌞💛🌞💛🌞💛 RIP

Thank you to everyone who attended Arthur's funeral today and the reception afterwards. It was a true celebration of his life. I shall remember my Uncle Arthur for his warmth, his humour, his generosity, his thoughtfulness, his independence of mind and his indomitable spirit. I shall never forget the support that he – and Joan- provided for me and my Mum after my Dad and brother died so soon after a wonderful family holiday at Widemouth Bay when my Dad and Arthur had had us all in fits of laughter. It was a privilege to do whatever I could for him myself in later years. When the opportunity came, in 1990, to move with my job to Chertsey the fact that we would be so close, living in Chobham, to Joan and Arthur was a major plus. Arthur became like a grandfather to my daughters, Paula, Jennifer & Adèle – their own grandfathers having died long before they were born. He saw them grow up and they were devoted to him. He was always interested in what they were doing and particularly enjoyed hearing about their travels to parts of the world he hadn’t seen although he and Joan did holiday extensively in Europe. He was fascinated by new technology and particularly the wonders of the internet. He showed me a letter that Joan had written to him when he was away during the war. In the letter Joan mentions going to see a Don Ameche film and how much Arthur looked like Don Ameche. I was able to google the film and photos of Don Ameche for him – and yes he did look like Don Ameche, described on Wikipedia as a handsome, debonair, dapper, moustachioed leading man. Yes that was Arthur! He was a keen angler, preferred rugby to football, he loved helping us to count the money after Macmillan Cancer Support charity collections, the weather was always perfect in Horsell however much it was raining in Chobham, he had never had a speeding or parking ticket in his life, he never took a driving test, he knew his way round Surrey like the back of his hand, he enjoyed going out for a decent pub meal, popping into ‘Charlie’s Place’ on the way to Windsor. Hardly a moment goes by without us noting some connection to Arthur – places visited, interests shared, things he enjoyed – his passing leaves a huge void but one that is filled constantly with the happiest of memories. A very special person who will deeply missed.

To the greatest, great Uncle

I will never forget my great Uncle Arthur. I saw him as a grandfather, as did my sisters. He has given us so much and I am eternally grateful.

I treasured his stories about his childhood in London, how he met Aunty Joan and how they moved to Horsell – ‘the village that never rains’ (a fond motto of his). I loved to hear about his work in the film industry and about those he met at Ready Steady Go, or the places he dined at in London. I was fascinated by his memories from the War and the ration cards or letters he showed us. But what I most loved to hear about was his and Aunty Joan’s family holidays and the pure joy and laughter they seemed to have on their trips. His descriptions were so vivid I almost feel as if I were there watching the performances he gave in a tutu skirt! Uncle Arthur gave me so many rich visions of those I never met, including my grandfather and grandmother and that filled in so many gaps for me. I admired his love of Aunty Joan and his family, his home and garden and of course his ability to fix absolutely anything!

I cherished the Sunday dinners at our home with Uncle Arthur teasing or joking with us about current news or about who could count the most after a charity collection.

All my love and heart
Adele Fash

A very dear Uncle who was an integral part of my life for so many years. I have many fond memories of time spent with both Arthur and his beloved Joan both at their house in Hammond Road, Horsell and on family holidays. Who can forget Arthur dressed as a fairy complete with tights and wings, dancing round the front garden at Widemouth Bay. Rest In Peace dear Arthur - now reunited with Joan. xx

I will never forget the vision of my husband Ken Sinclair and Arthur travelling together on Ken's motor bike from Crystal Palace to Humphries Laboratory in Goodge Street every day and the laughs they had working together. We have kept in touch each year since 1951. Arthur was always the ladies’ man and he always mentioned how lovely I looked on our wedding day, and I always reminded him how many years it was, every time he brought it up! Bless him and Joan - it was a pleasure to have known them both.

Taken in April 2016. Adele and I had been to a Guardian tasting evening at Sheekey's fish restaurant in Central London. As I knew Arthur used to go to Sheekey's with Joan, we brought him back a memento.

Such a fabulous photo of Uncle Arthur :) He'll be fondly remembered as a grandfather figure to me and my sisters. I always enjoyed listening to all the fun he, Aunty Joan, my grandparents and aunties used to get up to, along with dad and Les. Being a photographer myself, we used to share photos and look at the old photos and films he took. He loved to take the ladies on adventures and we would always chat about exploring this country and abroad. He and Aunty Joan had a big place in our lives and hearts and will be missed greatly. Love to Les, Carol, Jamie and Gemma - I look forward to sharing stories and memories at the celebration of his life xx
