In loving memory of Bernard Towner who sadly passed away on 19th March 2018

Adrian Smart wrote

I have just recieved the sad news of Bernard. Duncan shared many of the funny stories they had together with me including the Sinatra concert. I think they may well have seen the late Maurice White together too.Sorry news

I had the great pleasure (and honour) of knowing Bernard as an uncle, as a work colleague (at the CCC in the late 1970s and early 1980s and as a friend. He had an endless supply of stories and a great skill at laughing in the face of adversity. We shared a similar sense of humour and a love of debating the politics of the day. I will miss our many soap-box discussions where we tried to set the world straight! We also shared a common interest in jazz music and I have fond memories of the numerous, mainly impromptu jazz nights I attended with Bernard and my dad at the South Norwood Conservative club. A particular high spot for me was when, about 2 or 3 years ago Bernard, my dad and brother and I all attended a concert at the Albert Hall to see Frank Sinatra junior perform.
Bernarde will be sadly missed but fondly remembered. I could not have wished for a better uncle....

Bernie was my dad's dearest friend and after dad had his heart attack and was brain damaged I could ring him up any time of the day or night and he was a great comfort to me. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time just a few weeks after the sad passing of his wife Maureen.

You held my hand when I was small
You caught me when I fell
You are the hero of my childhood
And my later years as well
And every time I think of you
My heart still fills with pride
Though I will always miss you Grandad
I know you’re by my side
In laughter and in sorrow
In sunshine and in rain
I know you’re watching over me
Until we meet again

I love you Grandad my shining star xx

So lucky that my daughters have the same amazing, happy, special memories of my nan & grandad as I do. Couldn't have asked for more devoted, caring Grandparents & Great Grandparents x
