In loving memory of Michael Taylor who sadly passed away on 21st June 2018

Mick was a devoted husband to Alpana, father to Arun and grandfather to Anouk, Cassidy and Jetson. He will be remembered to lovers of Indian classical music as a talented sitarist and together with his wife, Alpana, he was a pioneering influence in developing the interest and awareness of Indian music and dance throughout Britain since 1976. He was one of the very few westerners to have gone so deeply into the study of the history, theory and practise of the Sitar and to have achieved the status of solo concert artist. His playing was especially noted for its depth of feeling (raag-dari) and for its authenticity. Mick's creativity spanned compostion for televsion and films, dance productions as well as promoting concerts for visiting Indian artistes. He will be very sadly missed.

Nick Price donated £30 in memory of Michael

I was so saddened to hear of Mick Taylor's passing. A chance finding while sorting through some very old papers was a tatty green Gestetnered A4 programme of an evening I will never forget. May 1978. Alpana Sengupta, Mick Taylor and Markande Misra, tabla at Jacksons Lane Community Centre, Archway Road, London. Also advertising Alpana's Indian Dance Classes on Saturday afternoons at 60p. I have since lived elsewhere and lost touch, a mistake I now realise.
RIP

I have known Mick for many years, since Alpana-ji started coming to Gottingen to teach and perform around the early 90ies. She often was accompanied by him and we also started going to London and stayed in Myrtle Road on many occasions. He always used to speak his mind freely and was a diligent thinker and observer. He was not the one to make sugarcoated compliments. His fine sense of humor was very present, e.g. commenting ironically on us ‘the Germans’ just for being ‘there again’ or breaking household equipment that works differently in the UK. In spite of the comments he always made me feel very welcome and did a lot for me and other guests from our branch of the School and made us feel at home and at ease. He helped in the background to make performances, examinations and summer camps run smoothly. He created wonderful music which we all enjoyed and will continue enjoying and did so in a very quiet and modest way. He held to high standards, especially regarding himself, and I am wondering how he would comment on me writing this…
I want to express my gratitude for having known him and for all the support for Alpana-jis students! He will be missed dearly!
Meike, from the German branch of the Alpana Sengupta School of Kathak
