This was from the time my Aunt Shirley came to visit Mummy after her car accident. Although blind and brain damaged, her face lit up when she heard her best friends voice.

I am joyful to know my Aunt Shirley is reunited with my Mummy (Wendy) and can picture them giggling like school girls again. I remember when she, Uncle Sydney, and Linda came to visit us in the US. It took us several weeks to understand each other’s accents. I still remember how she would ask me “Did you?” “ Could you?” to things I’d say thinking that was so funny. I remember when she came to visit Mummy after her car accident that left her blind and brain damaged knowing it was breaking her heart. It was probably her brightest moment in her darkness to recognize her best friends voice. They talked for hours.... I think it was more that Mummy listened with a big smile on her face. I have gone through a box of photos from her past and saw many wonderful photos of the two of them together. I can just imagine how special their relationship was. I find comfort knowing they are probably drinking tea and giggling again.

Although a sad visit bringing Mummy’s ashes back to England, it was bittersweet too. Getting to spend time in a place she grew up and visit with family and friends was wonderful.

When I think of Shirley Green I remember her smile cracking open her face, and her very smart outfits - one in particular was a fine checked suit and a pillar box hat. She used to give me a lift to the Grammar School (her old alma mater - I wasn't surprised to learn from the tribute given at her funeral that she passed the 11+ a year early; she was always smart and quick). She and Sid were great, lifelong friends of my parents and when my mum succumbed to the same condition that would later claim Shirley, Shirley was one of the few true friends who kept visiting her, right up the the very end, for which I will always love her. She had a big heart, a keen eye for fashion, a passion for "doing", whether that be sewing or cooking or organising the home. Good bye Shirley, you will be very missed. Pippa x

  • I remember your name and think I met you when we brought Mummy’s (Wendy) ashes home. You were one of her school friends too right?
