In loving memory of Ernest William Oakford who sadly passed away on 14th September 2018.

Ernest, or Ern as he preferred to be known, was my uncle. We had a long and positive relationship and he taught me many things, much of it about car maintenance but also about life in general.

He loved cycling and entered the London to Brighton run in aid of the British Heart Foundation no less than 25 times. During that time he donated a considerable amount, hence his wish to donate to them one more time instead of having flowers at his funeral.

His time in the navy, which started at HMS Ganges in 1939, was as you might expect one of mixed emotions. But he had fond memories and would often talk about these with his family, friends or anyone interested to find out what went on, especially during the war. One of his proudest moments was when he and I attended the annual Armistice Day parade in London, as can be seen in the photograph.

He was also presented with the Legion d'Honour at the French Embassy in London for his help in liberating that country during the Normandy landings.

We shall all miss you Ern and I think the sales of a certain pub chain may now go into decline!

Ern was a wonderful character and I really enjoyed his company and the stories of his time in the Navy .

We will all miss his great sense of humour. Christmas won't be the same without him.

Dear Ern,

It is with a heavy heart that we have to bid you farewell. You were truly an amazing man, who did so much for so many people. That was reaffirmed when you received the Legion d'Honour, for which we were incredibly proud.

We hold so many fond memories of our time spent with you. In particular, we will never forget the first time you held Harrison in your arms, when he was just 4 days old. The look on your face was one of pure joy and elation. We will make sure that he always remembers his Great Great Uncle Ern.

You will forever be in our hearts and minds.

With all our love,
Andrew and Maria
xxxxxx

  • A very proud day for Ernie. It was an honour to be there on the day to witness him receiving well deserved recognition from the people of France.
