In loving memory of Louie Vincent Atkinson who sadly passed away peacefully on 19th October 2018 after a short illness aged 84.

Louie was born in the Bronx, New York in 1934 to parents Louie and Agatha. Third youngest of seven children. The family moved up state to New Jersey where Louie worked the farm looking after chickens and hogs before joining the American Airforce where he became a staff sergeant instrument technician.

He met and married his first wife and had 3 sons Louie, Steven and Glen. The family lived on an American Airforce base in Texas before their return to England.

He settled in Melton Mowbray and worked at Pedigree Petfoods where he met and married his second wife Norma. Louie became step father to Mandy and Julie who he looked on as his own.

Louie, Norma, Mandy, Julie and Glen emigrated to America in 1972. Setting up home in Miramar, Florida and working in a power station. In 1973 they completed their family with a daughter, Louanne.

Louie started at Florida Power & Light with a broom in his hand and within 3 years he worked his way up and was offered the job of being 2nd in charge of the company. On that day he handed his notice in as his wife was homesick and the family returned to England. A typical reflection of Louie’s nature, putting others before himself.

He returned to work at Pedigree Petfoods as an Instrument Technician/Electrician. He loved his job and his colleagues, making life long friends along the way. He left in the early 1990’s to enjoy a long retirement with his wife.

He enjoyed caravan holidays in the U.K., owning several touring and static caravans over the years. Loved his Jaguar cars, driving many models over the years before he lost his sight due to diabetes.

Most of all he worshipped the sunshine and for Louie there was no better place to enjoy it than where he used to call home. Miami, Florida. He went back every year sometimes twice until the most recent years where his health meant shorter flights could only be tolerated. He was delighted to be able to make his granddaughters wedding in Tenerife in 2017.

Louie loved his family with a passion and he will be remembered fondly as the yank that was always smiling and happy. A kind, gentle man who despite his failing eyesight and lung disease never complained.

His passing has broke the hearts of many, he will be greatly missed by all that had the pleasure of meeting him.

All are welcome to join the family to celebrate Louie’s life. Family flowers only. Donations to Derbyshire Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance if you would like. Link is attached.

RIP Louie.

X

Our Uncle Louie, who is now an angel up in heaven, will always be kept dear in our hearts. Although we were far apart in miles, we were kept near in smiles and love. He welcomed family and friends with an open heart and open arms. Uncle Louie also liked to have fun and take chances. One memory comes to mind when it comes to taking chances. I flew into Gatwick from Germany for Glen”s wedding.Uncle Lou and family greeted me at the airport, and in almost no time, he handed me the keys and said “here, drive!”. Imagine the surprised look on my face, having never driven on the ‘right’ side of the road! My expression was nothing compared to the impish look in his eyes. They always had a certain sparkle in them. I knew it was useless to argue (I’d lose), so off we went. I don’t know how but we all survived and went on to have one of the best times I’ve ever had the three days I was there.
Although we were lucky enough to meet up with Uncle Louie and family several times in Florida, it took a long time for us to visit him again in England. This past May, Uncle Louie and family welcomed my wife Anna, my son Anthony and myself to their home as if we had just seen them the week before. We had such a great time and did not want to leave but that was Uncle Louie, ever welcoming. He could not take the smile off his face that we were there. We had to have a ‘proper’ Sunday roast and what a treat it was!! We really enjoyed our visit and can’t wait to come back. It will never again be the same but we know Uncle Louie will always be with us in spirit.
Although we know that Uncle Louie always be in our hearts. While we are saddened that Uncle Louie will not be here in person, we know that he would not want us to be sad. He would rather have us raise a glass and toast our family and friends, and be happy. Here’s to Uncle Louie!!

Love Anna, Kenny, Anthony, Christopher and Josette

Oh Dad... I wasn’t ready for you to go, but then I don’t think I ever would be. Heaven has gained someone so special in you and this world has lost some of its sparkle. You were the best dad to me, always there with the biggest hugs, best advice and unconditional love and support, always making me feel safe. You were my hero. I’m completely heartbroken and miss you so much already. I have the best memories which I will cherish forever. I promise to look after Mum always. I love you Dad. Till we meet again xxx

The world is a different place today. Maybe we didn’t see each other too often over recent years, but the fact you were always there meant more than we can say. We have plenty of memories to cherish and you’re still with us in our hearts. God bless Dad xx
