Jenny Dewar (4 May 1938 - 31 Dec 2018)

In loving memory of Jenny Dewar who sadly passed away on 31st December 2018. Beloved wife of the late Alec, cherished mum of Mike, Ali and Gus, dear mother-in-law and granny.

Jenny was born in 1938 in Bristol, to Betty and Charlie Bolt. She loved reading from an early age and attended Edinburgh University where she studied Liberal Arts, graduating with an MA in 1961. At University she was heavily involved in student drama and she met Alec, who she married in 1963. Jenny taught English at Bo'ness Academy until her first son, Mike, was born in 1966. Ali followed in 1968 and Gus in 1970. She made a lot of things in the home including clothes, soft furnishings, toys, jams and wine. She and Alec were enthusiastic theatre-goers and took their children to shows from an early age. We remember Purves Puppets, panto and, later on, trips to the Traverse in the Grassmarket and to all manner of strange venues in the Fringe. Jenny and Alec loved reading and the house was always filled with books. Jenny returned to teaching and taught nightclasses before working full-time at Firhill and Bathgate Academy.

When the kids left home, Jenny and Alec travelled widely in Europe and once to Canada. They were especially fond of Yugoslavia with its beautiful countryside and historic cities. On retirement Jenny occupied her time with new crafts, particularly embroidery and drawing, while continuing to knit and to cook beautiful meals for friends and family. After Alec's death in 2005 she got involved in a number of groups including the Southside Heritage Group and the Embroiderers Guild, through which she made many new friends. She read avidly and continued to go to the theatre and cinema on a regular basis. She doted on her three grandchildren. For her 80th birthday celebration last May she chose a cosy Italian meal with her family.

As she grew older she slowed down just a little, but she was still creating, cooking, reading and organising events for the various groups that she participated in when she passed away suddenly. She was a very special lady who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
