Born as Elizabeth Orr, she was known to friends and family as Liz, or Beth. Born in Bangor, Northern Ireland in 1936, she was the youngest of the family of two brothers and a sister.

She came over to London to work in the NAAFI and decided to take shorthand lessons. Dad at the time was the teacher and she became “Teachers Pet”. She married John Bird in 1961 who was a member of the CTC cycling group and they led an exciting life with “the group” travelling around England and Europe on their bikes!

Very active with her cycling as well as yoga, bridge, French classes, W.I and jam making, she always found time to bake a cake and to care for others around her.

After winning the fight against Lymphoma 10 years ago, she was unfortunately diagnosed with Lukemia last October. She was accompanied and cared for throughout her illnesses by the Macmillan nurses to whom we owe so much.

She will be sorely missed by her husband, two children and three grand-daughters and we can all be proud to have been part of her life as she was a very brave lady and a loyal friend with a great sense of humour.

MAY SHE REST IN PEACE AND BE FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS.

We were very sad to hear about Beth's passing. We appreciated her newsy Christmas letters. It was a pleasure to meet Beth and John some years ago when they visited Canada.

It is with heavy hearts that we search for words to express what a wonderful person Liz was. Always kind, caring and cheerful, with a great sense of humor. She became one of my Mum's dearest friends when the Birds moved to Langley Vale almost 50 years ago, and will be sadly missed by so many in the community. Heaven has truly gained another angel. Rest in Peace Liz, and our sincerest condolences to Caroline, Terry and John

It was so sad to hear the news that Beth had passed away - she was a wonderful auntie to me and my sisters ever since we were tiny.

So many happy memories of playing as children and visits as grown ups !

I was so glad I was able to see her at Christmas - when she looked so well !

My heart goes out to John and Caroline and Terence - it must be so hard without Beth - but I know you have the strength to keep going (she'd expect that of you anyway !)
and to remember all the good times.

My very best wishes

David

I have lost my oldest friend. We were schoolgirls together at Bloomfield Collegiate School, Belfast. Sadly I cannot attend the funeral, but my daughter, Fiona Brown, Liz's God-daughter, will be there and will make a donation on my behalf. I send my heartfelt sympathies to John, Caroline, Terence and the rest of the family. We miss loved ones when they go, but their memories are with us always.
