Rex Boughton Tribute for Order of Service

Rex Travers Boughton (born 4th August 1938) was promoted to Glory on Wednesday 3rd April 2019. A faithful servant of God who will be missed by so many.

Rex was married for 56 very happy years. With his beloved Dorothy they had Christopher, Andrew, Matthew (PTG) and Claire. He loved more than anything a big family gathering and in later years welcomed Collette, Kate and Richard. Rex took great delight upon becoming a grandfather to nine beautiful grandchildren: Emily, Jessica, Jack, Allister, Beth, Abigail (PTG), Samuel, Benjamin and Annaliese.

After leaving school he worked briefly as a farmer and then, during his National Service, joined the Band -2nd Batallion of the Parachute Regiment, where his euphonium playing flourished. During this time he undertook numerous parachute jumps. He then trained as a flooring specialist, holding many positions. He ended his fulfilling career very happily as the site manager of Bridge Primary School where he is still fondly remembered.

Rex was christened in the Methodist Church and came to Canterbury Temple as a young boy. He was a Salvation Army soldier all his life. Whilst at Canterbury, he held many local officer commissions, most notably Quartermaster and CSM. He loved playing his euphonium, serving as a bandsman for 64 years.

As a family we thank God for his faithful service as a soldier of Jesus Christ. His motto in life was always ‘get involved’ and he certainly did this, as he used his many gifts to renovate and undertake countless refurbishment tasks at both his home Corps of Canterbury Temple and in later years at Chatham Citadel. He was a great encourager and greeted everyone warmly with his beaming smile! The book of James encourages us to demonstrate our faith through actions / works and Rex - Our Dad, epitomised this.

We are deeply saddened that he is no longer with us, but grateful that he is now at peace, has gained full healing and has received a ‘well done’ from his Saviour.

We praise God for a great example of a man – husband, father, grandfather - who lived a Christian life in every aspect, including family, marriage, work, church and beyond.

It has been our privilege to come under his influence.

I have had the pleasure of sitting next to Rex in Chatham Salvation Army band since he and Dorothy moved to the area. This has been a delight with Rex always cheerful, encouraging and enthusiastic about his christian service as a bandsman, Rex added a huge amount to the Corps both through his banding and his practical work in the Corps.. He clearly loved the Lord, his family and the Salvation Army and showed this through the way he lived his life. We pray for Dorothy and all the family, who will be feeling this gap in their lives at the present time, and know the Holy Spirit will be their strength as was the case with Rex.

Rex was a loving and caring man and always thought of people before himself. He played an important part of my life and he will always live in my heart. He light will always shine in everyone hearts. It was a privilege to know him and have in my life. God bless you all x

Rex was a truly lovely man and will be greatly missed, not just by his family (of whom he was so proud), but by his many friends. We hold you all in our prayers at this sad time. May you be strengthened in the knowledge that his witness left a mark on those who were privileged to meet him.

Deeply saddened at Rex's Promotion to Glory. Always a Christian gentleman in the 30+ years I knew him. An infectious laugh, always an IT novice! A great man for the outdoors - gardener of extraordinary talent and a man who loved his fishing. A great musician and committed man of God to his beloved Salvation Army church. A great local leader and loyal local officer. A more sincere and down-to-earth practical craftsman there wont be.
